Construction Blog: Mustang "All In!"

The Mustang's hull is complete! Painted in the colors of J. J. Pearce High School's varsity football team (of which my son Ryan is a defensive starter!) and bearing the motto of the 2015 team "All In!", I think she looks pretty sweet...hope she sails as well as she looks! At the least she's balanced well, as evidenced by these pictures. There will not be much to post for a while as I build out the rigs and radio board, so look for a video update in a few weeks...until then fair winds!

The Mustang in her livery!

Bow on, "All In!" is the 2015 motto for the varsity team.

Good balance to stand like this, just need to add the bumper and rudder.

Trinity River Yacht Club (TRYC) emblazoned on the stern, #62 is my son Ryan's number.

...with Peck! They should be pacing each other soon!

Video Blog: Mustang Construction Update; Red, Shiny, and Ready to Fit Out!

The Mustang's hull is complete, painted, and finished. I'm very happy with the results, just need to add the must tube, rudder, and rigging post to finish fitting out. The hull graphics of a white Mustang with white trim go on next, and I think it will look very sharp! Here's the latest:

Mustang update, now that's Red!

Painting Day! I prefer Krylon because, in my experience, it goes on smooth and thin, drys fast and hard, and doesn't run easily. This is "Banner Red"...looks pretty red to me! The deck needs one more coat, and that's it for painting. I use a automotive finish restorer (a micro abrasive) after a through drying period (several days) for a final smoothing and polishing. The graphic scheme of the Mustang will be my older son Ryan's football team, the Pearce Mustangs:

The red & white of the Mustangs!

After painting, I'll secure the thru-deck fitting, mast tube, and rudder tube. I've sourced a white vinyl adhesive Mustang like on the helmets to go on the sides, and they'll be some white stripping. When it's all complete I'll do another video and catch everyone up...meanwhile, here she is:

Test fitting the thru-deck fitting for the running rigging.

That's quite a shine, and still gets one more coat!

That's not a blemish, but a reflection of the chrome fitting!

Building Blog: Mustang nearly ready for Paint!

Just a quick look at the priming, filling and fairing process...most of the gaps in the deck-hull joint are filled, and most excess filler sanded away. Just a few small blemishes remain and it will be time to paint! Taking the time to remove epoxy  splotches, uneven filler, and smooth gaps will result in a sharp looking and good sailing boat.

Mustang gallops along...

Final test-fitting before adding the deck; just some minor trimming and shaping needed!

Looking aft, the hull gets strength from its shape,
and is therefore light & strong.

Balsa bow-plug installed; note the narrow entry.

Swing rigs typically mean flat decks...

Keel box lines up on the dots, should be nice and straight!
